Lindy Hop Class Recap: Lindy hop legends imitate one another!
A comparison of styles! Skye/Naomi and Andy/Mia dance a prescribed choreography side by side to demonstrate some of their characteristic movement. The first time through, Skye/Naomi imitate Andy/Mia and Andy/Mia do their own style. The second time through Andy/Mia imitate Skye/Naomi's style and Skye/Naomi do their own.
Some observations:
Naomi's movement has more pulse and tends to have more of a consistent momentum, Mia's is more smooth/flat and momentum tends to accelerate and decelerate more. Mia wraps up into her own arm more. Mia seeks "away" and lingers in stretch as long as possible.
Andy seeks connection and stretch through his arm connection w/Mia earlier than Skye, lingering in str...

Lindy Hop Class Recap: Fancy leader swingout styling
Просмотров 6 тыс.4 года назад
Skye taught a fancy leader swingout variation. 1234: rock step jump jump 56: hold 7&8: join follow on triple step. On the jump, jump, move forward and then right. Switch hands and try to use the body to catch follow's momentum. Present the left hand to look for earliest possible connection with the other hand for a fast connected turn on 7&8. It's easiest if the swingout is a forward feeling sw...

Lindy Hop Class Recap: Charleston mini-choreography and variations (with Skye and Naomi)
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.4 года назад
Naomi started by teach a great charleston variation (123456: normal footwork 7812: step step step-hold, picking up the normal 34: kick step of the next Charleston basic). When doing the 7812 step step step-hold you can stylize it by let the other leg sweep. Then Skye taught a very slow tuck turn down the line that honors the typical 8 count feel of Charleston. Then we did skip ups (12: rock ste...
Lindy Hop Class Recap: Key follow skills!

Mia first starts by demonstrating hallmark following skills of direction, momemtum, and follow through with a right side pass. Then Mia gives a great follower body movement / footwork variation for an open tuck turn. (12: rock step uh(3): R step 3: L kick uh(4): L ball 4: R step (and pivot/turn) 5&6: LRL triple step). Also pay attention to the follow through on the turning momentum with her lef...
Lindy Hop Class Recap: Unusual ideas catching momentum on 6
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.4 года назад
Andy and Mia did a number of moves based on the fundamental of a "yo yo" (8 count move that is a send out that gets caught at the beginning of the second triple - on 5 - and redirected back to closed). The first idea (which is cut off) is a 12 count idea (step step triple step step step step step step step triple step) and the key moment is on 6 with a little turn prep (with counter body twist)...
Lindy Hop Class Recap: Triple step alternatives & groove
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.4 года назад
Andy and Mia taught an alternative to our typical emphasis (and pulse) on every beat, instead emphasizing the even beats. Emphasis is created through more linear movement, sending the shoulders, and pulse. They demo it most effectively on 4, 6 and 8 of a typical swingout. As another idea to play with you can echo the emphasis with a heel drop after each even beat (1 - rest 2 - step 3 - heel dro...

Lindy Hop Class Recap: Groovy triple step alternatives
Просмотров 5 тыс.4 года назад
Andy & Mia taught an alternative style to triple steps. I find it help to think about striking with the ball of the foot just before the beat to free the sliding foot and to allow the heel of the stepping foot to strike the ground on the beat. Another tip is that you really need fast shoes / fast floors for this to work. Also unlike much of lindy hop you are sending your shoulder (not your hip)...

BTW, Jack Carey is famous primarily as a great West Coast Swing dancer along with his wife Annie Hirsch. Also, he is the creator of the "Jack and Jill" style competitions (random partner, random music, relaxed non-toxic attitude), which he created to be another kind of "mixer" thing to get more people meeting and social dancing with each other.

You publicly posted your comment (in lieu of privately messaging me your concerns) so I assume it is to pressure me into providing a response, to amplify your voice, and to provide a platform for your moral outrage to shame both me and the people that are viewing these videos. You did not attend School of Hard Knox, you did not organize it, nor did you instruct there. I assume then that you are starting this debate because of a sense of moral outrage that I posted a video recap from any event - not this particular event or even these particular instructors - but posting a recap of any instructor at any event all together. I respect the wishes of the teachers and the wishes of the event organizers. If they want it down I will remove it. I do not make money off of this content. My RUclips channel is not monetized. I am a photographer and a budding videographer. I provide my expertise and thousands of dollars of gear; I spend many hours organizing, editing, uploading, and tagging content for the benefit of others who love lindy hop like myself. I do this for free. There are many international instructors that choose to share recap videos themselves: Peter Strom, Naomi Uyama, Mike Roberts, Laura Glaess, Patrick Szmidt, Natasha Ouimet, Shauna Marble, Dan Newsome, Kenny Nelson, Jesse Hanus. There are many famous venues that share recap videos of their content: Uptown Swing, 9:20 Special, Jam Cellar, etc. I organize classes here in the DC metro myself and if you look through my content at anything labeled Rock Step Rebels, you can see that I paid for the instructors to come and teach, I paid for the venue, I took the recap videos, and I shared them. Your argument is that the recap videos are the content. That it is what the attendees have paid for. I believe the attendees have paid for a venue to dance, they have paid for a group of highly skilled dancers to divide them into different skill levels so that they can learn with their peers, they have paid for internationally renowned teachers to fly in from around the country, they have paid for the instructor’s time. They have paid for an experience. This 1 - 3 minute recap video is a brief summary of the content. Your argument is that this is jeopardizing the teacher’s money. In your words, “this is how they make their living” (through paid teaching gigs). Though you did not say this specifically, I assume that you are saying that there are people out there who were planning to go to an event, but then saw the recap video and decided not to go because they got the recap video for free. This is like saying I was going to take a class at university but I already got the syllabus for free so I think I’ll pass on the class because I’ve gotten everything of value from it. Maybe there are people out there like this but I feel confident in my opinion that they are a small minority. I think you may just like the idea of being part of a special club of secret knowledge. That you don’t want any content on RUclips relating to Lindy Hop because then it’s no longer yours, it’s everyone’s. You want knowledge asymmetry where you have special knowledge that the public cannot access. I take a different view, one that Frankie Manning shares: his love for the dance and his joy of sharing it served his ultimate goal of wanting everyone to lindy hop. That this dance is incredible and that literally every human being on the planet should have the opportunity to dance it - even if their only access to it is through these brief recap videos.

For anyone reading this, Dean Collins and Jewel McGowan are the two who 'define' this style. Jewel sat back, Dean got down. In reality there was a huge variety at the time. Here's a great example: ruclips.net/video/X2QnZm0dXIk/видео.html

The videos you take at workshops are meant for your viewing or the viewing of those who attended and paid to be there. These workshops are how amazing instructors like Andy and Mia make their living. Out of respect for the instructors, I would personally like to ask if this were taken down. No ill-will or malintent, just wanting to respect these great people.
